Work with the Pros 2012 – Week 3 Fight Childhood Obesity with Fruits and Veggies

September is Childhood Obesity Month, and whether a child is overweight, underweight, or just right, the importance of a healthy diet and training the taste buds should not be underestimated.  Children that have good eating habits become adults that have good eating habits.  What you eat and how much you eat can be the best defense against obesity, so the earlier a child learns to eat right, the better.  Get low cost individual health plans here.

Is obesity really an epidemic?

Where do you start?  Is your child a junk food junkie?  A picky eater?  A carbohydrate machine?  The more you answer “yes”, the more you should get help.

If you have a child that has a decent appetite, decent tastes and a tepid interest in trying new things, or at least wants to want to try new things, your task is infinitely easier.  In this case, foster your  child’s interest by involving him in trying new things, trips to the farmers market or produce isle, scanning new recipes, taste tests, quid pro quo’s and food tasting challenges, trying new restaurants cooking classes….all of these are fun ways to increase the list of fruits and vegetables your child eats.  Check out the link at fruits and veggies more matters for other great, fun ideas to share with your child.

And if you have the junk food, carb guzzling, nose turning child?  Patience.  Perseverance. Patience.  Perseverance.  More Patience.  Try to remember that the ultimate goal is for the child to become a great eater one day in the future, not in the moment, and take it slow.  Go for one new food a month, tried every which way until something sticks.  And talk to the child about it.  Read about health and nutrition together and set out a plan for learning to eat a new food a month.  And if that is too fast, make it every other month.  Remember that the goal is to become a better eater over a lifetime, not to cross a child’s eating off your list of things to do. Communicate to the child that while being a picky eater is unacceptable for them, learning to eat better is a long process that and you can help them do it, the same way you help them learn to ride a bike or hit a baseball.   Check out Health Insurance Providers with lessons on healthy eating.

And while you should keep the trying of new foods a positive experience, discipline is appropriate too.  Junk food is NOT an acceptable choice for a meal.  SODA is not acceptable every day .  Make a list of the foods your child eats with them, calculate the nutritional value of each, and take the most offensive ones off the list, and do not buy them.  The same way you would discipline any other unacceptable behavior.  If you need help determining good food from bad, show the list to your child’s doctor, and get input from him or her.  If you suspected that your child had vision, hearing, or learning problems , you would not hesitate to contact a doctor or specialist for help.  Take the same approach to their diet.

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your website?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.

Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 images.

Maybe you could space it out better?

Thanks for the feedback. We are working on a new blog and website. The look and feel will be much different and blog posts will have more “spacing” and appropriate images.
