One app, Fun with Directions, allows the child to touch and drag items according to the direction given. It practices listening and memory skills and includes animation and colorful graphics. First Phrases uses pictures and animation to show the child how to put words together to form simple three-word phrases, such as “drop-the-dishes” and even allows recording and playback. Their latest app, First Words International allows the child to learn 50 basic objects in seven languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, French, Hindi and Russian. This app includes many different representations of each word to help with generalization that is often challenging for children on the autism spectrum. It also features a progress/data tracker and ability to record! These apps are a great way to practice speech and language skills, not only in therapy but at home and with any child who is learning language!
