New Year Resolutions Can Last Beyond Valentine’s Day

Author: Kelley Filice Jensen

Monday, January 7, 2013 – the gym was crowded this morning, like it is every first Monday of every January for the fifteen years that I have been going to the gym.  The gym “regulars” tend to be very cynical about the January crowd, betting how long it will take to weed out the “new year’s resolution temps”.  And, indeed, it does seem that by Valentine’s Day the resolutions are over, the weight loss goals  have evaporated before any fat has had a chance to.  Sigh.  I refuse join my cynical gym mates, and I refuse to give up on people before they even get started.   If you are starting a new year’s resolution to lose weight and exercise, Welcome!  You can do it, there is no magic, just hard work.  Keep reminding yourself that, think of other hard work you have committed too that has led to accomplishment, and that reminder of your capabilities will keep you motivated long past the first Valentine’s Day cards.  Here are some other things to keep in mind:

Jennifer Livingston: Is Anyone Else Disturbed By Her “Support”?

Author: Kelley Filice Jensen

TV anchor Jennifer Livingston made quite a stir when she attacked a viewer who dared email her requesting that she examine her health, lose weight, and use her built in pulpit to inspire her community to do the same.  According to Jennifer, and legions of supporters, this made the man a bully, a meanie, an uncaring cad, you name it.  While, arguably, he is the winner of poorest word choice in recent memory, many of us are not buying that he is the anti-Christ.  Perhaps he could have said something like, “Jennifer, you are so beautiful, talented and a terrific pillar of this community.  I think that you have the potential to really help people lose weight and get healthy.  I personally struggled with obesity as a child, and I know that watching you lose weight would have inspired me to do the same.  Losing weight is very hard, but you have what it takes to lose it and motivate the community that adores you so much.”

Bloomberg’s Ban on Soda: One lump or two?

Author: Kelley Filice Jensen

One lump or two?  That is what our Grandma’s said when they poured tea and coffee.  The days of one or two lumps of sugar are long gone.  Now it is 20 or 30 lumps, more like one CUP or two.  And we want it, we need it, we deserve it.  It is our constitutional right to drink a liter of soda.  It is not the government’s role to tell us what to put into our bodies, they should stay out of it.  Foot stomp.  Hold breath.  Turn blue.  Petulant child.  Petulant OBESE child whose foot stomp has caused the floor to quake.

Why is a daily multivitamin supplement crucial to health?
Vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are vital aspects of health and wellness because they help regulate all of the many processes that take place in our bodies. Even moderate deficiencies can lead to serious health consequences. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet is fundamental to ensuring proper nutrition, but the reality for most of us is that we do not meet all of our nutritional needs through diet alone. Supplementing with a daily multivitamin/mineral fills in the nutritional gaps that can be present in even the healthiest diets. The use of supplements continues to rise year after year, with the latest data showing that 49% of U.S. adults took a multivitamin/mineral in 2011, with 40% of people citing “overall health/wellness benefits” as the main reason they take supplements.

What is Preventive Medicine for Men?

Men never seem to go to the doctor, but it is not because they should not go.  Preventive medicine, preventive screenings, preventive health applies to men as much as women.  Where does a man start?  He starts with his doctor, and regular checks of his health for those little problems that can develop into severe disease or debilitation later, if left unchecked.  Here is a list of necessary preventive screenings for men.

What causes Acne Scarring?

Dr. McNeill: Picking!!!! No matter how much acne, or how large acne cysts become, they will not cause scarring if left untouched. The skin may hyperpigment and become darker for a while, but this hyperpigmentation will not be permanent. Picking at acne can cause scars that are permanent. Take Care to lessen hyperpigmentation with a hat.
